9th November 2028

I am working as an art director at Mamas & Papas headquarters in Huddersfield. I am earning upwards of £60,000 and am comfortable enough to afford luxuries and plenty of holidays.
I am married and have twins - a boy and a girl. We live in a 5 bed detached new build in Wakefield and have two expensive new cars. I have two dogs - a dachshund and a chow chow.

At work I oversee that general design team and direction of company branding - I earn a lot of money without actually doing too much :) I go to plenty of corporate events and important conferences where I receive awards and lots of praise. I have plenty of friends at work and a good social life. I can work from home whenever I chose to help with childcare and spend time with my husband on his days off.

I have my own freelance card/wedding invite business on the side that I do in my spare time - it is something I really enjoy and earn quite a bit from.

OUGD502 - End of Module Evaluation

Overall, I have enjoyed this module and I do believe it has helped further my practice.

I found Studio Brief 01 particularly challenging, purely because it was so hard to get professionals to respond to my emails! I understand they are busy, working people, but I did find this really quite disheartening and it almost put me off going into the industry in a way! It almost made me think 'if people in this field are this ignorant, I don't want to be a part of it'! But that is just the nature of this industry, really. I was desperate for Top Girl Studio to reply to me as I felt that it would make an amazing creative report to go alongside my new self-branding. Eventually I had to settle for a girl I knew was a recent graduate, and her work is very different to mine so it wasn't that ideal.

Studio Brief 02 I feel went a lot better, I enjoyed coming up with ideas and designs for the new building. It was interesting to work as a collaborative team and I did feel like I took quite a leadership role in this project, which was new and interesting for me. It opened my eyes up to potentially managing groups in the future. I was really happy with our final designs, I thought the presentation itself looked really effective and I think the actual presenting went really well.

I was really nervous about Studio Brief 03, as I didn't feel too comfortable getting up and presenting alone in front of a group! I followed the theme of my new self branding for the presentation, so I think it all tied in really nicely and looked very visually effective. I even put on a matching pink outfit on the day of the presentation so that it all linked in aesthetically! I was very nervous at the start of the presentation but I do feel like I eased into it towards the end, and I got some nice feedback.

I have found my own personal and professional practice quite hard to juggle this year as I feel like all of my time has been taken up by the other modules, and in hindsight I do feel like I put PPP on the back-burner which is something I want to change and improve on next year.

For Level 6, I would like to make PPP one of my absolute top priorities as it will seriously help develop my knowledge and understanding as a graduate going into the world of graphic design.

OUGD502 - Fuet Magazine

I just love everything about Fuet's graphic design direction - it is really unique and different. The large bold text against bright colours are really eye-catching and effective.

OUGD502 - Catherine Kim

Catherine Kim is a graphic designer and content creator based in New York. I am really attracted to the quirky, fun nature of her work and would love to use her as inspiration for future projects.

OUGD502 - Missguided

I am really drawn to the way Missguided's site is designed - I love the clean cut graphics and colorful imagery!

OUGD502 - Patrick Waugh

I found Patrick Waugh on Instagram and I really love his work! He is a collage artist but he has quite a provactive nature which I am really drawn to! I love the raw edge to his art work.

OUGD502 - Nasty Gal Diary

I came across this page on instagram that a girl called Laura Hilton runs - she describes it is a 'visual blog' where she simply just posts pictures of people/things/fashion etc and I just love the vibe it has!

It was also one of my main inspirations when designing my self branding.

OUGD502 - Studio Brief 02 - Creative Report - Abby Ward Creative Report

Abby Ward is a new graduate in graphic design from the University of Lincoln. She has a particular interest in illustration and traditional techniques. Abby is passionate about making and producing items to make people happy, and loves creating keepsakes that can be treasured.

The kind of design that interests her is patterns, illustrations and painting. She mentioned how she is drawn to cute, quirky and fun outcomes and loves to include puns and sarcasm. She told me how she feels card design incorporates all these things in one, hence why she sways towards that area! Her main influences are Paperchase, Skinny Dip, Sighh and ohh deer. These brands all follow a similar pattern/hand-drawn  illustration style - she said working for them would be a dream!

She has completed two placements, one at Lello Design, a card and jewellery designers, and one at a branding and marketing agency in Nottingham called RizkMcCay. She also works freelance for The Symphony Learning Trust (a trust of primary school academies in Leicestershire) and Scalford Primary School. She takes interviews and film footage in the school, and makes promotional materials for them. Abby also mentioned working freelance in the past to produce wedding materials such as menus, seating plans and so on.

Abby believes that listening skills are the most important within the design world. She mentioned how it is imperative to be able to listen to clients and take on feedback, even if you disagree with them. She also discussed how she struggles to set her own deadlines - something she needs to practice on throughout her career!

In terms of taking criticism from clients, Abby believes that the client isn’t necessarily always right. She says that criticism from other creatives can often be more useful as they have more knowledge in the area. Abby suggested that when the client isn’t creative, you sometimes need to guide them more than they guide you – however, you should always take their comments on board.

 Abby mentioned how she weaned herself off her laptop. She says felt it was restricting her work and deciding all her outcomes, so she chose to move away from digital design and more towards traditional techniques. There is nothing wrong with computer-led design, she says, but it is nice to explore other avenues in order to push your work forward.

Her best tip for an undergraduate was to do what you love. She said "it took until my final year at university to realise that my style is a hand drawn, illustrative approach". She mentioned how you should never be scared to be different to else, as being different can make you stand out!

OUGD502 - Self Branding Stationary

OUGD502 - Self Branding Instagram Release

I released/'announced' the new self branding on my design Instagram account by using 6 posts in order to create a 'grid' effect.

This was to display a snippet/glimse of myself and the type of person I am.

OUGD502 - Self Branding Development

Following my initial thoughts on Juicy Couture and blackletter,

I came across this image and I just instantly knew it was the one!!!!

It had the blackletter I had mentioned, along with the pink colour of the tracksuit. I just loved the combination of the red and pink together. I knew that I wanted to recreate something like this for my own branding.

Colour swatches;
I started playing around with different variations of blackletter, trying out which combinations worked best. I knew I wanted my branding to include/be focused on my own name.

I made a mockup similar to the image I had seen;

Playing around with different formats;

Initializing/creating a logo-type image;

Circular variation for social media display pictures etc;

Square imagery for social media/website purposes;

I also started playing with some other 'boujee' style imagery that would link in with the Juicy Couture elements;

Exploration;

OUGD502 - Self-Branding Revamp Ideas

This is my self branding from first year.

Looking back on it now it looks unrefined, unprofessional and doesn't really represent me as a person.

I wanted to focus on something that was 'more me' so I set about re-branding myself. I used Top Girl Studio as a main inspiration for my branding as I love everything about her work and it is so ME!

I wear a Juicy Couture tracksuit that I never take off, and I wanted to really play on this within my self branding!

I decided to look at Juicy Couture's branding.

Lots of pink!

 Juicy Couture are known for using a traditional Blackletter typeface in their branding.

I felt this typography was something I could really play on in my own self branding.
