OUGD501 - Studio Brief 01 - Abby Ward Interview

Hey Bronte,

Hope these are okay for you haha! If you need anything else just give me a shout always here!
Have a nice end of uni and summer - maybe I'll see you around some time you never know!

What makes you passionate about graphic design?

The idea of being able to make and produce items that people want to love and own. I really enjoy creating cute and funny things that people want to have to keep, thinking that I’m making someone happy with my designs is what keeps me going!

Where have you previously worked?

I have done 2 placements, one in a card and jewellery designers called Lello Design, and another at a branding a marketing agency in Nottingham called RizkMcCay.

What qualities and skills should a good designer have?

Listening skills are by far the most important. It doesn’t matter what your strengths are (digital/hand drawn/video/animation etc) if someone wants to work with you or use your work they already like what they see. But it is imperative to be able to listen to people and take on feedback- even if you think they are wrong.

How do you handle hard criticism from a client?

Always take it on board, but remember that the client isn’t always right all the time. Other creatives feedback is often useful and actually works better when you make improvements they suggest, because they know what they’re talking about! However when a client isn’t creative, you sometimes need to guide them more than they guide you (after all you’re the one with the creative eye!)

What brands do you most admire?

Paperchase, skinny dip, Sighh, ohh deer. Are just a few, I really like pattern and handmade illustrations which is something these brands incorporate into their work lots! It would be a dream to work for them!

What have you learned from your mistakes as a graphic designer?

Ive learnt not to be controlled by my mac! In my first year of uni I got a mac and used it for every project I did! However I let my computer decided the outcomes of all of my designs, instead of testing myself and doing something more unconventional (eg collage/ hand illustration). I still use my mac of course, however I’ve now learnt to explore my options- theres nothing wrong with computer led design, but sometimes its nice to look back and realise how under the influence of adobe I used to be compared to now!

What kind of design interests you?

I love patterns, hand illustrations and painting. Stuff that is cute and quirky and fun, and particularly if it involves puns, sarcasm or a cheeky tone of voice then it is right up my street! I love card design for this reason as it involves all of the above.

Do you have a freelance business/personal projects?

I work freelance for The Symphony Learning Trust (a trust of primary school academies in Leicestershire) I take interviews and film footage in the schools, and then make promotional video footage for them as well as leaflets. I also freelance for Scalford primary school and pre school, again making leaflets, logos and promotional material for fundraisers that they have. I have also freelanced in the past to make wedding materials such as menus, seating plans etc.

How do you cope working under pressure/time constraints?

I really struggle to set my own deadlines- in the future I’d love to work totally for myself possibly with my own business but this would take practise! However when a deadline has been set by uni or a client then I always make sure to meet it and check in frequently to update on progress.

Any tips for an undergraduate?

Do what you love! It took my until 3rd year at uni to realise that my passion is graphic design that has a hand drawn and illustrative approach. Never be scared to be different from everyone else- just because everyone is using macs doesn’t mean you have to as well. I’m now thankful that my style is so different to my peers as it makes me stand out!
